This'm my first post here, so I hope I'm not transgressing any local customs or anything. Greetings, all! Anyway, just wanted to share what happens when I spend a day listening to Songs, E.P.Onymous and Bellow on continuous loop: I start noticing recurring themes through the songs they choose and taking them rather too seriously. So, life in a Spiers and Boden song--and how to survive it.If you go down to the woods today, you'll probably be dead by morning. If you survive the woods, you probably did so by cutting body part(s) off people.Being invited out of your bower at night is probably bad for your longevity, particularly if your beloved takes you out into the woods (see 1. above). All sailors are either horny and insatiable or horny and frustrated. This is probably because they've been brought up to believe that strategic parts of their anatomy grow mould unless constantly exercised. If you have the misfortune to be arrested, your only hope is to find a boyfriend or girlfriend before they try to hang you. When a woman conceives a child out of wedlock, it's a sure sign that someone's about to be dismembered.

Ah, you spotted the gory theme...Mike Harding once referred to J&J as the "Burke and Hare of English Folk Music". And they are such nice chaps, really....

Welcome!

Another one...if you're talking to a Baron, don't tell him his wife used to be your lover, unless you would like your head to be removed.

And for God's sake, don't COURT TOO SLOWLY!

And beware wild boar, especially if you have a penchant for sitting in trees..

Your chances of survival are still much better than if you lived in a Seth Lakeman song, even if you are stupid enough to go out on a morning in May!

Seth Lakeman played at the Cockpit in Leeds a few weekends ago. And I missed it because I only found out a few days before and I was knackered from being out too much anyway.

I missed a Seth Lakeman gig too, at the Zodiac in Oxford. It was on the same night as Spiers and Boden at Banbury Folk Festival. And a mighty fine evening it was!

And if someone refers to you as "my pretty fair maid", BEWARE! You're about to be widowed, robbed or murdered horribly..

I have such a sore throat...if I were in a S&B song I might try sucking on some cuckoo eggs to make my voice pure and clear again, mmm nice!

When I think about wild boar I see Benji and Gideon as Asterix and Obelix...actually no, that's just wrong!!!

Actually, no, it's just brilliant. The mental image is now well and truly stuck in my head.

Good advice. Though avoiding both months would also mean you missed a lot of the fun. Perhaps just make sure you have a bit of a lie-in at that time of year. It's those early mornings that seem especially troublesome.

Early mornings are *always* troublesome! (though often pretty, as it was this morning )

So true. But of course if you avoid the early mornings, you also miss out on the sweet song of the harmless birds. What a dilemma!

Don't go down to the woods today...or rather stay away from any particularly pretty glades or groves where wild flowers grow and leaves flutter...most likely you'll trip over the mangled corpses of at several spotted pigs, the crumpled body of a wild witchy woman, face split open by sword, and the heads of one or two previously bonny young servant boys...

In fact most places take on a decidedly sinister air in S&B songs, from fairs to castles to pricly hedges...shudder!

I think I'd quite like living in Spiers and Boden world. Frequent life-threatening incidents are character-building and probably much more exciting than sitting in an office for 8 hours a day, mucking around on online forums

I'd probably stand a better chance of getting my muslin crumpled once in a while too. There seems to be a fair bit of THAT going on, as well as the maiming and drowning.
