Rosie, I am SO out of touch with stuff (sometimes I feel so OLD!!) that the bill for this year's Reading Festival may as well have been in chinese!! But recent stuff that's grabbed me are Lemonjelly, Banco de Gaia (trancey stuff with a bit of world music thrown in...I do yoga to it!), and I recently bought a Goldfrapp CD which is bizarre enough for me to think it's brilliant!. I quite like Radiohead too...though I know people who say you don't need Radiohead when you've already got Pink Floyd ;o). And The Streets 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' is fantastic....it should have won the Mercury Prize.
Best Gig, haven't been to a non-folk one in years...! Billy Bragg at Islington Festival about four years ago sticks in my mind...he was well into his Woody Guthrie phase by then btu did all his usual stuff as well...he was great!. I have a hankering to go to one of these 80's revival concerts...!!!!

Well I don't know about anyone else but I think the most exiting new band in the UK today are POKE, certainly raised the roof at Glasto and breaking down boundries like a steemroller in a garden-maze. and my what sexy beards they all sport, grrrrrrr.
Best live gig I ever saw was probably Carter USM at the Duchess of York in Leeds (may it rest in pieces) a.k.a. some soleless bloody high street shop nowadays.

Holy cow! that was a surprise to read! I've always had the impression that, own wierd tastes apart, Banco de Gaia and Folk were mutually exclusive. I've been a big fan of Toby Marks' stuff for years, since the early bootleg tapes 'Freeform Flutes and Fading Tibetans' and so on but never found anyone else who likes him and Trad Arr tunes.
More power to your fiddle and sequencer Fee.
Cheers

Stranger and stranger... First Banco de Gaia, then Carter USM. I was never really a fan of theirs but I did become their official photographer for a little while!

I stand in awe, They had amazing energy live and I just wish i'd had a camera with me myself that day, They were well and truely on their way down at the time but still put on an amazing show. How did the utter f****ed upness of the 80s not create more angry punk rebels?
anyway, this is off the subject completely. S&B rule too, and it's thanks to a blatant rip off of their 'Boston Harbour' that I passed my audition to join an amazing Taiko group so thanks to you guys and keep up the good work!

I've always had eclectic/catholic, never know which is the right word!!, taste I guess...I'll give anything a chance (unless it's something that comes from that girl and boy band factory just outside Dublin ).

Yes I went to see Elbow once upon a time in ffice:smarttags" / onload='javascript:showImageWidth(this,600,600)' class='AutoImageWidthTopic' style='cursor:poionter'>London... got to the gig quite late having been detained by the power of the Bombay Sapphire and found that I was stuck at the back, under the balcony and unable to see anything at all!!! I must admit at this point that I really am quite a short-arse.ffice ffice" / onload='javascript:showImageWidth(this,600,600)' class='AutoImageWidthTopic' style='cursor:poionter'>
'Fear not' my young cousin cried and produced two cans of lager which she duly placed on the floor.
For the couple of seconds I managed to gain my balance I did actually spot a ginger haired man strumming a guitar on stage.... before toppling in a rather ungentlemanly fashion into the baying crowd that is!
Had never heard of Elbow before that gig and can honestly say I doubt I shall again!

Can't say that I listen to anything other than folky stuff these days, but in my (cough) younger days, I was particularly into Rainbow, Gillan and Iron Maiden!! (Oh dear, what does that say about me?!).
I remember being at a Gillan concert, in the front row, and stretching soooo hard just to touch his legs!!! (Needless to say, I didn't quite make it). Oh to be young again!! These days I just heckle the Jo(h)ns!!
Add to that a touch of Tori Amos and I think that makes me, well, quite weird!
And ... er ... the Bay City Rollers, when I was even younger!

Things that have interested me recently:
The Decemberists: Castaways and Cutouts (some folk appeal here)
The Iditerod and Sharron Kraus: Yuletide (folk singing over nice droney, moody electronica)

Bugger!!! I'll try logging in and posting this time....
Oooh, let's think....
Led Zeppelin
Marillion (the latter-day stuff)
All About Eve
Masters Of Reality
Steve Earle & The Dukes
Ryan Adams
Porcupine Tree
Jeff Buckley
Pink Floyd
The Blue Nile
The best gig by another non-folk artist/group would be The Police in 1983. Blimey, that ages me a bit...

Led Zeppelin? I have Physical Graffiti on a cassette tape (one of those plastic things with bits of black tape that get stretched if you play them too often then self destruct!!). Incidentally, I'm sure one of the current songs by a modern band that I heard the other day has pinched the guitar riff from one of those tunes!!

Should have said hello at the Hollywell Rooms. I've heard of them. First time I saw them was at the Reading Festival in, ooh, 1987ish. Ah Jullianne Reagan! They've split now, sadly. Hopefully Ms Reagan will go on at Cropredy and sing some Sandy songs. She's done it before a few times, very good!
Cheers
Nick
p.s. Still rooting for Bellowhead to play Cropredy this year. Any news yet?

I should, it's true I'm sure we'll bump into one another one day
I've heard of them
Funnily enough I'm not suprised to hear that, since we seem to have an almost identical taste in music
