Mmm... music.
The mere mention of Katie Melua and Norah Jones makes me want to remove their tongues and lock them up
Me, lemme think:
Tori Amos (although of late she's gone a bit fucking odd)
Tom Waits
Jim White
Little Death Orchestra
Live
Ben Harper
Queen
Fiona Apple
Jepp
Morrissey/The Smiths
Goldfrapp
Soundgarden
Holly Cole
Kathryn Williams
Hank Williams
Chris Isaak
Regina Spektor
Abra Moore
16 Horsepower
And likely a helluva lot more!
Best gig? Um, Tori Amos, solo in London 99. Simply for Juarez. Juarez solo piano with the improv at the end about her miscarriages *shudders*
Oh my.
Failing her, it would have to be Martyn Bennett just about anywhere I saw him. Is anyone off to his memorial concert?

It's in Edinburgh on 15th April. I'll be there hopefully! Have tickets now need travel and accomodation
And aye. Of late. She's just gone a bit soft really, has our Tori. Sadly. I want her to start hammering out tunes on the piano again and ditch that sodding band and stop playing nice little ditties

*giggles*
Oh ye can... ye definitely can *winks*
The one I love is "I never left you for a banjo, I only just turned around, for a poodle and a corvette" )
And oh my. You should hear her of late. She just released an album with a song called The Power of Orange Knickers *giggles more* Which is my adopted child. I claimed it. It's mine! I call it POOK, affectionately )
And when she talks about writing songs and tunes and stepping into sonic shapes and needing to piece it together before it allows her to leave the shape, creatnig maybe a window or a door?
Oh yes. It can get weirder ;o)
But I just want her to play the goddamned piano more! She is solo for this UK tour so fingers crossed! Bosey and Hammond *creams*

These are the other things i liskten to now and again
I LOVE The Paperboys (rootsy, bluegrassy happy stuff!)
The Bills (as above)
The Corrs
I do like a bit of Disco when the mood strikes (so you can imagine how thrilled i was when i heard the Bellowhead disco sea shanty!!!!! , a hybrid of two of my fave music types!! )
Counting Crows
The LOTR Soundtracks
The Harry Potter soundtracks
The Lord of the Dance soundtracks.
I do have stacks and stacks of CD's, but most of them are from when i was still a pop fan when i was a teenager, i just don't listen to much anymore except folk and the above!!

My musical tastes are all over the place. I love folk and jazz and some pop/rock but my main interest is classical. Not your namby-pamby Mozart or Bach but your full-bodied Stravinsky, Shostakovitch and Sibelius! I also like contemporary classical as well John Adams, James Macmillian, yes even Harrison Birtwistle.
If your talking pop stuff then I still listen to Tom Waits, Kate Bush, Supertramp and Genesis (I'll be skinned alive for mentioning the g-men).
I suppose you could say my record collection was eclectic!

I love folk of the type done by Christy Moore and Eric Bogle and so listen to lots of it. I also like folk rock punk such as The Pouges ,The Men They Could'nt Hang, Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys.
Modern stuff love The White Stripes, Hard Fi, The Magic Numbers.
And loathe as I am to admitt it I am a closet Madge (Madonna) fan (sorry)

Hopefully I'm telling my non-folk favourites. If not I'm a newbie so please forgive. I've been a folkie since I started at College in Crewe and atended the "Sing-out" Folk Club held at the Brunswick down road from Station. I helped run the Crewe & Nantwich Folk Festival for a few years in charge of Publicity. (Best idea I had was to use Beer mats with guests on and not being attached to any Brewery we could distribute some to any pub in the Crewe and Nantwich) As to non-folk my list is so long. My Son used to be pure heavy metal but now he appreciates talent and effort and is far more thoughtful in his choice. Good songwriting he appreciates now. I'm a fan of "No Fixed Abode." Not pure Folk and working Folk and Irish clubs. Busy working on new album at the moment.

I've just been bought Johnny Cash 'the Man comes around' fantastic. Still love Tori Amos, no matter how nutty she is. I normally try to sneak one of hers into a set now and again.

It would be easier to say I appreciate effort and heart which means in reality there is very little I don't like or appreciate. Most of the people listed so far I know and like. I help run the Belper Folk Club where we'll be getting Spiers and Boden check out our Website http://belper-folk.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ I play their latest to advertise the gig before we start it goes down well. I've never come across them before. We can't afford "Bellowhead" (Would our stage be big enough)? Hopefully we'll packout.

Music I like; Aerosmith, Scissor Sisters, KT tunstall, Red Hot Chili Peppers and lots more although I don't listen to a lot that isn't folk these days...
Gig wise, Earth Wind and Fire were amazing, also Nelly Furtado and Daniel Bedingfield (sorry!)

Erm...metal, rock....think thats about it really.
Love Steve Hackett and Pink Floyd.
Oh, and Johnabaker? You went to Crewe college? Ever heard of Mike Jones? He got kicked out for arson, theft, and damage to property (among many other minor pranks). He hung out with two huge guys called Mark and Bill.

Non-folk stuff I like includes Crowded House, Kaiser Chiefs, Chilli Peppers, Fleetwood Mac (especially Rumours). A couple of the best non-folk gigs I've ever been to were New Model Army (although some might argue that they're folk), somewhere in London in the early nineties, and Carter USM at the Reading Festival in '91. Nirvana also played that year- it was a great time to see them- just before fame took hold.
