Well, I guess that's because you are one of those people who were born knowing how to play tunes.
Oh I don't know about that - I can play on the beat without speeding up too much, thats about it...
Your link is still down!Cheers, Countess
Not sure what you're on about there - looks fine to me, you mean the

Hi Cott
I've put a reply about the link in your PM box because it's too long and complicated for here.
Thanks again for the stuff about LilyPond.

Hey. hugandkiss, didn't I say just that a few posts ago? and didn't my elusive mate cakey set up a thread for this very purpose? nevertheless, I for one will take any advice going on how to play better and in my estimation, cott is one of the best people around to ask.

I always suspected most of the blokes on this MB were a tad pathetic but honestly, Sidey, haven't you taken a wrong turning and imagined you were on a site which looks...er...similar to this one?
Besides, having just got my hands on 1st Cut, I am equally enamoured - in no particular order - with Tim, Rob, Benji & Paul.
And just because I'm a widowed countess with the ex safely dumped down the deep drawer well, you really shouldn't make assumptions.

Hey - no fighting on my messageboard! Break it up lads & ladesses
But seriously, I'm glad you like the Dr. Faustus CD Countess, I got mine 2 days ago and love it to pieces, I'm just so relieved they have a CD at last. I was a dep for Tim a couple of years ago for a ceilidh in somerset, and then Paul didn't turn up because he was trying to get back from his honeymoon in Scotland but got delayed. That meant I had to start the tunes - and let's just say I wasn't that confident about the material as it was my first gig with that line up!
Also Countess, the male members of this mb (few though they are) are usually incredibly sensitive. I'm sure Sidey is fully in touch with his feminine side and was just winding you up.
I think a given on this board is that the music is the main thing and typing in to little purple boxes is what we do when we are not able to play it
As for the original thread. I think written manuscript is rubbish if you are me (i.e. dyslexic) but if you are someone else it is probably great ....... but I'll never know.
Cheers
Squeezy
PS - if you want a good argument go on to uk.music.folk (email based newsgroup - you can get it on google groups) and start a thread saying how good FRoots is. <stands with fingers in ears waiting for explosion>

Ok, Squeezy, I'm really sorry for ranting. You're absolutely right, the main thing is playing the music. I'm just in from doing just that and I'm off to Sidmouth in a few hours so I'll be leaving the little purple boxes alone for a while!
But I have never in my life posted on umf and don't intend to. A few posts ago I made clear what I think of (most of) that shower. I just lurk and rage. They couldn't sustain a cogent argument there to save their lives; their only weapon is negativity.
At the risk of setting off another series of yawns, I do think you should take a look at LilyPond notation though. To a background of the Dr Faustus Set and May Reel No 1 it's not that painful, really it's not!

Or you could go to the eceilidh message list and say that you think trainers are the best kind of shoes for ceilidhs.
Or you could go to rec.music.makers.jazz.guitar and say that you really like the stratocaster.
Or you could go to the BBC2 folk and acoustic board and say you like Ry Cooder.

I had a really pointless argument in Sidmouth library because (to the collective relief of you all) I have been unable to access this message board from there because it contains, allegedly, 'adult material'... yer....right! For those with nothing better to do, you could perhaps investigate what else aimoo gets up to which so offends the good, upstanding worthies of Devon.
Squeezy, if you want you could now close this thread because the great news is I have found the best fiddle teacher in the world - Nick Wyke of the Wren Trust - who has given me the confidence to play tunes by ear and not be forever bound by the music. Many, many thanks too to Kirsty Cotter and Gina le Faux for such amazing technique workshops.
So, the answer to my original question is that if you have any difficulties in tune learning, just go to the Sidmouth where there are so many wonderful, kind and sharing musicians who are only too pleased to help. Thankyouthankyouall.
Cott : 3 pickups are just too OTT but you might get away with a telecaster. And if I could be bothered I'd argue with anybody that Ry Cooder is a good guy. Oh, and nobody ever banned me from a ceilidh for wearing trainers (only for mixing up the dances and not taking it seriously),

Talking of Sidmouth, what memories (good and bad) do those that were there come back with?
My worst one was failing to get in to the 'an hour or so with ...' because I got there too late and it was already full 20 minutes before the start!
However, this was more than made up for by the meeting of the Avatar support group!! More on this later ... !!

Oh Mrs K, were you locked out on the arts centre grass then? That was me, up on the window ledge doing Outlandish Knight impressions. Can we move this to another thread on who or what we saw (or didn't see) through a window?
Didn't know you'd had an avatars meeting. Was it you that sent me those weird texts?

Hi Countess,
I must confess, I was far too pissed off with myself for missing it, so I caught up with DTN who was performing in the arena, so I didn't really notice anyone outside. I hope it was good from the window!!
There was a posting a week or so before Sidmouth about where we might meet - I did wonder if you would turn up, but five of us managed to meet up, and I have the evidence to prove it!
I'm not aware of sending you any weird texts, although with this board, anything can happen!!

Ha ha.
Excellent performance at the Ham (where I DID get to see you, as you probably noticed!!). I'm glad you saved my favourite for the encore - I'd been waiting for you to pick up that box throughout the entire performance, so when you walked off without having touched it, I was pretty sure of what was coming next!
By the way, what was that slight hiccup of Jon's - was it just the sheer sweat causing him to slip? I think you both managed extremely well, considering the extreme temperatures!
Cheers

Oh, so I still don't know who has been texting anonymously or what they wanted, if anything. More importantly, however have we got so far off topic? What about shifting this Ham stuff to Fish and Chips so we can talk about lyrics for a change? Like the version of Child 68 (Young Hunting/Earl Richard) with 44 verses, underwater candles and divers?

Rhiannon: Just seen this.
Blimey, that was a long time ago! This is a song that JB did at Sidmouth 2003 that I've never heard him do again since. Which is a shame because he spent years searching for it, having heard it once at a singaround while still at Durham. Weird thing is that I knew the song too, sort of, from when I was living there a decade ago, but not well enough to make a coherent reply when he was looking for it on Mudcat about 5 years ago, and I didn't know then who he was anyway!
So, no, it not about me and him eating fish suppers but about two different people entirely. A lovely song.

I wish they had sing arounds where I live, I could do with a good bit of bellowing now and again, (even tho i sing all the time anyway) and why was Jon in Durham? Did he go to uni there or something?

I can't read music - well I can in slow motion but not well enough to learn tunes properly. I need to hear it a few times and then I can play it if it follows the usual patterns. Some of the weirder stuff takes longer.I reckon I have the same thing with musical dyslexia. I am dyslexic, but have learnt to cope with letters and words. I find it ridiculous that a language (written music) has the same symbols to mean all the different notes - just in a different place. To me it would make much more sense if the sign for a G crotchet was different to an A crotchet, like a letter of the alphabet, but the rhythm was marked out by more subtle diferences like position.I like ABC though!CheersSqueezy
Hello,
Have only just seen this lot so I thought I would add. My entire family are dyslexic apart from me and they can all learn tunes (on any instrument) by ear. My sister was a great classical violinist but had to give up because she couldn't follow scores, she used to blag her exams and things by learning all the pieces off by heart.
When I have been teaching children with learning disabilities of all sorts to read music I type it all out on Sibelius and change the note colours. So notes correspond to colours and they can differentiate a bit more between them. It helps me to because I normally memorise things in colour - different shades of paper for different modules etc.
Try it out and see what you think!

I can only read music very very slowly when seeing it for the first time. People think I can read while playing, but I've usually memorised the sequences of notes after seeing them before. The same applies to sight-singing. I've fooled people into thinking I can sight-sing when in fact I just memorised notes after hearing them sung to me. I always assumed I was just too lazy to read the music, I find it a real chore...
Playing by ear is way easier. Not to mention more fun..

Hmm. Interesting question:- I'm "stave dyslexic"(?) - I have come to this conclusion after a 1st taking on an instrument when really quite young, and consistantly (and to the infuriation of my music teachers) playing by ear, and basically guessing the notes. I just can't tell what line (or space) a dot is on without getting really close and counting the lines. Glasses didnt help - I gave up trying to learn the violin, piano, cello, cornet, etc when younger as I just got screamingly frustrated with not being able to read a single note.
I finally took up percussion, and was delighted when I discovered I could actually sight read the rhythms (never had much of a problem with those) AND the stave position - Why? Cymbal hits are marked with "x" instead of a "o" on the stave, and the other notes are mostly at the vertical extremes of the page. I still get confused between mid tom and snare when they are on the page in isolation (i.e. i haven't got any snare notes to compare against in position).
Revalation came when someone showed me the shape note notation: The notes on the stave all have different "blobs" that are easily distinguishable (in a key) so for me, any one of them is identifiable in isloation.
I used to "sing the gaps" by guessing the relative positions of the notes on the stave, but this really doesnt help with notes in isolation, and when reading anything "oirish" the runs just blurr into single black blobs ;-)
So now I learn by ear, if anyone gives me a score I have someone else emore musically literate than me to play it through to give me the shape and the key, then I can usually use the score as a reminder. But if I put the sheet music down and come back to it, I've usually forgotten it and need a reminder!
Just my 2 p's worth :-)

I'm supposed to be a classically trained viola player training for a degree...but I play fiddle too.
I mostly learn from manuscript if I'm playing classical stuff, but for fiddle it seems better to learn by ear. That's how I've learnt The Game of Draughts from Eliza Carhy's Rice.
I believe someone was asking about the origins of manuscript? Has this question already been answered? If not I can tell you!
