I'm hoping this will be a good place to get a few tips from some melodeon players! Having recently bought a melodeon (Hohner Erica), I'm trying to learn a few simple tunes. I'm having a bit of trouble keeping the fingerboard still when sitting down. Standing up is ok, cos the straps hold it tight against my body, but when sitting down and resting the fingerboard on my right leg, the whole things seems to wobble about. Should I use the thumb strap or do I need to adjust the shoulder straps? The shoulder straps are quite loose but will need extra holes punching to go any tighter. Any help would be greatly appeciated.

Hi there Dr. Jimmy

There's no hard and fast rule about holding the box, what works best for you is probably the one to go for.  I can, however, give you a few tips on keeping the instrument secure when sitting down.

a) the easiest is to tighten up the shoulder straps - but sometimes the tightness required can be uncomfortable with 2 straps

b) of course using the thumbstrap will hold the instrument in place, but it can restrict the movement of the fingers on the keyboard.  A good compromise is to grip the keyboard with the thumb but not using the thumbstrap so your hand is more free.

c) try playing with only one strap when sitting down.  You can hold it in place better by pulling the instrument slightly to the left and use your knee/thigh to give further support.

Those are just a few tips I've picked up.  Another good place to look for advice is the forum section of www.melodeon.net

All the best

Thanks for the tips Squeezy. That's a big help.

I'll punch a couple of extra holes in the straps to get it tighter.

I'll get myself registered on melodeon.net. It looks like a good place to get chatting to other players.

I'm looking forward to catching you guys at the Bristol Bellowhead gig.

Just thought I'd let you know that the one strap, pulling over to the left thing worked well. I also punched a few new holes in the straps and the melodeon stays in play now rather than wobbling about all over the place!

Thanks again for your help.
