Hiya,They're made by AKG and are called the c419 phantom powered model. Actually Nick, I've got tons of them - but the other ones are all broken now. Anyone know of someone capable of fixing things like that?CheersSqueezy
Thanks for the info, John. The most common reason for a phantom-powered condenser mic not working is forgetting to turn on the phantom power But, beyond the obvious: I'd first suspect bad connections or broken wires; most likely at the mic end but possibly at the thin-to-thick cable adapter end. The next port of call would be the capsule. If condenser mic capsules get damp they stop working. That's why condenser mics come with little bags of dessicant. But this is less of a problem with instrument mics as opposed to vocal mics, unless somebody spills beer all over them... Lastly, there's a sensitive FET amplifier built into the mic. You're supposed to turn off the phantom power before unplugging the mic, as there's a risk of blowing the electronics if you don't. That's why mics come with locking connectors, to avoid the risk of unintended disconnection. At GBP 90 a shot they've got to be worth fixing. I'd guess that any competent electronic techician, especially one who works with AV kit, might be able to salvage at least some of your broken mics. What about asking at the shop they came from? Cheers, Peterkin
