What was the title of the pirate song that J & J are currently performing in their set? (The new one). And where did it come from again? (Because I have a head like a sieve at gigs, especially when I'm watching two excited young men leaping around squeezing and plucking??)
Any info on this would be most welcome..my friend thinks they got it off Peter Bellamy but we really can't remember..cheers

Is it "Captain Ward" ?.

Child Ballad 287 (that sounds a likely Spiers & Boden source to me!). The tune they do in the middle of it is the Radstock Jig (or I have imagined that bit and am just being haunted by this infernal piece of music... )

Cheers

Captain ward rings a bell but can't say for sure..and I've had a few suggestions from friends as to what it could be and now I'm confused completely! I'm normally quite good at remembering snatches of words I've heard or melody (even if it's just four notes!) But all I can really remember about this one is that it had a nice key change in the instrumental part (which isn't a lot of help if the instrumental is a different tune anyway!) I'm so annoyed that I can't remember!

It's Child Ballad #287. I've heard them do it just the once (it's first outing) but I think the text was more or less this:Captain Ward & The Rainbow quite close to what Dr Faustus used to do. The MIDI provided, however, is not the tune. Googling the title, however, throws up innumerable versions so you may well find the tune used among these. Sorry, I've not searched myself andf haven't had a chance to talk to them about it. It's such a fantastic ballad though, and you'll have tremendous fun researching it. And if you run into Tim Van Eyken on the way, he'll talk about this and other pirate stuff for England (in the true style of patriotic pirates who just don't do over English ships, hehe).

Quite right. Captain Ward from (predictably) the Peter Bellamy version. We've just added in a chorus as well - tried it out on the last few tour dates.

p.s. heartened to see that I'm not the only grammatical-pedant who manages to misuse the non-possessive apostrophe on occasion (see Countess's post above / sleeve notes of Songs ;-) )
