Hi Mrs A!

I think a number of us are (Mrs K? Are Fleet still going?)

The ONLY decent pub in Reading is the Hobgoblin on Broad Street. Otherwise it's mainly the usual hell of Wetherspoons and It's a Screams' you get in towns with a sizeable student population these days /. We went in the Volunteers (?I think) on St Marys Butts last time we went to the Hexagon (it's kind of opposite) which was OK, but very smoky.

See you there, we are in the standing bit!

Cheers

Fi

I wil be there with the Fi and Nick etc.

Just hope I stand up to it better than I did at the last Bellowhead gig at the Zodiac, where I made a right prat of myself by collapsing (through illness, nothing more, alas).

See you there

Really enjoyed the gig last night, what I saw of it - why did it start SO EARLY? 730 on a ticket doesn't normally mean the starting time! (well not where Oysterband are concerned anyway)

But  it was a great set, and a special highlight was the singing of The Holly And The Ivy with Oysterband - that is the traditional tune and I love it.

thanks guys hope to see you again soon

The Holly And The Ivy was great, I've not heard that version of the tune before but I do like it.

J&J any chance of playing it on Monday night at Nettlebed?

Trunkles.

I didn't see you Mrs A but I did have a look round! And Oxford Trunkles, you remain unfound! .

It was a great gig, I think I've heard the Oysters do Holly & Ivy before, can't remember where...maybe the Big Session gig in London a couple of years back...?

Cheers

I knew there was an Oysterband thread somewhere on this board! but couldn't find it this morning

So yes, once again we missed you Trunkles, but had a good old singalong to both J&J and the Oysters, imbibed a few too many and still managed to get the right train home again. It was a good night

Cheers

Nick

yes, once again we missed you Trunkles,

Ah well, it's always tricky to find someone at a gig when you have no idea what they look like!    But I was stood right at the front in the big session T-shirt if that helps any.

Fi, we were stood behind you for J&J, I rushed off to the loo when they finished then I couldn't find you to say hello!

You are right about the Holly and Ivy, they did it at the Big Session Forum gig, December 2004. I was so pleased to make it after just having an op, so I swapped my tickets for upstairs ones. It's really nice up there, comfy and good view.

I think I have that tune on a CD by John Kirkpatrick, and also on a traditional Christmas tape by Magpie Lane. It would be great if someone had recorded that version so we could listen to it again.

Trunkles, I think I remember seeing your back! You were stood very near our 'acquaintance' Jennifer who is a rabid Oysterband fan, quite loud and was wearing a 'bar code' t-shirt..

Will you be going to the Big Session next yaer, if so I will try and make contact.

Anne

Mrs A, a new CD of trad. stylee carols ia out from here  The Gift of Music, (it says it was published Aug 06 on Amazon).  "An English Folk Christmas"  featuring J Spiers, J Bowden (sic), I Giles and G Lewin, it has a Holly and Ivy on  it but I have no idea which version.

I found out about it via a hilarious conversation with my Dad, who's the one who bought it, but he refuses to play it until December, since it's CHRISTMAS music!

Cheers

Now I come to think of it their may of been two of us in big session T-shirts at the front, anyway I was the one in the green rather than the black. I remember Jennifer now as well - I happen to have the same shirt, as I too am a rabid Oyster fan! In fact I have all ready booked tickets to see then in MK later on in their tour - can't wait (again!)

I will be at the big session next year no matter what so if I don't see you before Anne I will see you there.

Trunkles.

P.S. I will be at the J's Nettlebed gig tonight if you happen to be going!

Thanks Fi that sounds interesting. I know where your Dad is coming from - I have John Kirkpatrick Carolling & Crumpets but I won't play it yet!

But I did make an exception for Warterson:Carthy : TDI as we are going to see the tour.

I know I posted this on another topic but since it came from the Reading gig it makes more sense for it to be here! A farmer pirate - what a mad idea.

Hope it makes you smile! Trunkles
