Hello everyone,Thought I'd take the plunge into the forums and start a topic How did you discover Bellowhead? For me and my good lady it was us flicking about on the TV remote and stumbling across coverage of a folk festival (Cambridge?) on BBC4. Bellowhead came on and literally blew us away.At this point you've got to remember that whilst I have pretty eclectic tastes (Kate Bush to Prince to Led Zep and most things in between), the good lady is an Elvis and Abba person. Never have our musical tastes meshed until that one moment.Literally as soon as the short set had finished, we were on the tinternet and searching for Bellowhead. Within a couple of days we'd booked to see them at Keswick and the Ep had been purchased.Keswick was a blast, finally the good lady and I could enjoy a concert together. And now, here I am sending off a cheque to get a couple of all day passes for the Oxford Folk Festival so we can have another dose of the Bellows. Who'd have thunk it, we were secretly folkies and neither of us ever knew.So then, how did you discover Bellowhead?

Errrrrrrrr..........

My mum saw them at Cambridge and past the word on to me. Being a S&B fan already it was only a small step to join the Bellowhead following.

I was at their first ever gig at the 2004 Oxford Folk Festival and was blown away on the spot.

Since then I have been to see them as often as possible.

I just hope that I am not working too much at this years Oxford festival so that I can get to see them there again (so to anyone who is going no crisis to distract me during the Bellowhead set, please).

I'd heard J&J already in Eliza Carthy's band, so I decided to go and see 'Bellowhead' at the first OFF (so I was at thier debut too) I was another who was blown away by thier sound. Like Sandra I hope I'm not too busy at this years Oxford Festival to see them make thier triumphant return!

Look forward to seeing your there Grindug....

I too was prancing about Oxford Town Hall in April 2004 when Bellowhead made their debut. This I regarded as my audition for Morris Offspring but since they still haven't invited me to join I suppose I wasn't successful. In my defence, I have to say that Fee and Sandra were prancing about too and definitely weren't blown away as I have seen them all over the place ever since. And will again at Oxfest 2006.

I can't quite remember when I first heard about Bellowhead, I think it might actually have been on this website (the old version of it anyway) where it was mentioned as Spiers and Boden's latest project.  I remember thinking "ooooh, that sounds cool!  Have to keep an eye/ear open for them".  Then about a year ago I heard them on Mike Harding's show.  The next day I went online and ordered E.P.Onymous, and loved it!  Still have to see them live, but I will make it one day!

I was stood next to Sandra and hubby Chris at Oxford Folk Fest 2004, swaggering slightly having been drinking constantly with them for the previous 8 hours (we'd only just met too! nice way to get to know someone )

What I remember was a massive sense of anticipation. We knew of J&J and had seen them several times as a duo and in Eliza's band but those were small and light acoustic styles. Here we were promised a football team with brass, drums and amplification. We had no idea what Bellowhead would sound like, whether it would be an extension of J&J's own sound, something excitingly different or just a swampy mess (which was quite possible - the acoustics in the Oxford Town Hall are not good and the sound could easily have descended into a mire.) If I remember rightly they started with Rambling Sailor and the question was answered in the first few bars. We went nuts.

I remember thinking after that gig that it was an excellent show and a great concept but was it a one-off? Was it good because it was Oxford lads doing a project for the Oxford Folk Festival or did Bellowhead have legs? I had the chance to see them at Sidmouth later that summer, up in the dance tent on the hill. That was when they proved that they were a major band in their own right. Been following them ever since.

See you all at Oxford Folk 2006 then! I shall be there, at the front.

Cheers

Unfortunately I didn't get to see them at Oxford 2004 , neither will I this year , but I first saw them at Sidmouth and they were brilliant!   I think the fact that the dancers broke the floor is evidence enough!!

Since then, I've mainly seen them up here in Newcastle, gatecrashed a few parties that sort of thing....

Brampton Live 2004. When they were still shiny and new! When the music stands were still there!!

I have to admit that i didn't know what to expect, i hadn't heard of the J's by themselves at this point, but i did know Eliza and she was billed to appear with them. So i toddled off to the main tent and took my seat and all these young men + one young lady took the stage. My boyf leaned over and said something like "oh they must do this to fund college or something!" (a tribute to your youthful looks lads!  And then they began, and i swear my jaw must have dropped 'cause OMG they were fab, like nothing i had EVER heard before.

And the fact that i thought that Squeezy was soooo cute didn't hurt matters either! I know the people that had read my other posts will be thinking huh? I thought she was a Boden fan? Well, that is true, but I was a bit taken aback by  him at first, being so very tall, and the way he presented himself on stage reminded me of the scarecrow from the wizard of oz! Very marrionetteish and a bit wild looking especially when he does the big eyes thing, (you know what i mean).  But as the evening went on he really grew on me.And now he is my faveourite singer ever, but I think they both must have magical magnetic powers because once you have seen them you are hooked for life!  As soon as the festival was over i was online ordering Through&Through and Bellow! And since then i have been to as many S&B & Bellowhead gigs as i can and even managed a ratcatchers gig in Nov.

And i have my tickets for Oxford in April which will be the furthest i have travelled to see them yet, being from Carlisle. So you will see me and my friends clinging onto the front of the stage for dear life having travelled over 270 miles just to see Bellowhead!  I do believe that this will definately be a lasting love affair!

xx Rhi

Eastleigh Festival, 2005.

Didn't know what to expect from the somewhat less than helpful description on the festival web site but became fans within moments. Hehehe, now I can truly say Been There, Done That and bought to T shirt. Seen them twice since, and looking forward to seeing J&J at Winchester next month.

Summer Sundae 2005 in Leicester.
I was in an unusual state of mind, couldnt get into the bands playing at that moment, so wandered over to Bellowhead and i stayed there for their set, had never heard of them and thought they would have fitted in better in the folk tent, not that they would have fitted mind... but i was really amazed and was glad they had been on the big outdoor stage.

First encountered and FELL IN LOVE WITH Bellowhead in a tithe barn in Wantage. The day before their first ever official gig together - at the Oxford Folk Festival! They played at my friend Jonny's wedding! How cool is that?

For some reason he had managed to book part of the band to whip us up into a frenzy of excitement, and then next thing he knew, most of Bellowhead were turning up to use the occasion as a dress rehearsal for their Oxford debut. They were awesome and made Jon and Cathy's wedding even more special!

Since then, I've seen them in Oxford and at last year's Trowbridge Village Pump festival. Tonight it is Worcester. Hurrah! They sound great and look great too! A perfect night's entertainment!

AAAH, BELLOWHEAD!!! SIDMOUTH 50TH ANNERVERSARY! I CHOSE STEEL EYE SPAN OVER BELLOWHEAD WHILST MY FRIEND HELEN SAW THEM. I CAME OUT CRAMPED AND MILDLY IRRITATED WHILST SHE CAME BACK FULL OF LIFE AND INSPIRATION. THE FIRST TIME I SAW THEM WAS JUNE LAST YEAR AT THE MAC IN BIRMINGHAM. BLOODY HELL!!!!! IF BELLOWHEAD DOESN'T REACH THE CORE OF THE CORE OF YOUR CORE, YOU HAVE OBVIOUSLY NOT BEEN LISTENING! IF SPIERS AND BODEN ALONE MAKE YOU WANT TO QUIT YOUR JOB AND PICK UP AN INSTRUMENT, IMAGINE WHAT A WHOLE BAND CAN DO!

ALL THE BEST, NAT WITHOUT HELEN TONIGHT ( ER, TODAY)

Yes, half watching Folk Awards on TV with my Steeleye Span fan friend. On came Bellowhead and it was , like, what was that? Only recall one song but made huge impact. Must have got filed in some cache memory in the brain and then we saw they were on at The Cheese & Grain,Frome in April 2006. Pestered the box office when tickets hadn't yet gone on sale. Not a brilliant turnout for the group that night (doing my best to convert as many people as possible) but those of us who were there had a great night. They just goy stuck in!

Loved Pete Flood's crazy percussion set up and totally mesmerised by Jon's destruction of his bow.

There was some great harmony singing that it would be nice to get more of sometime. Rachael has great voice too.

Cheers

Whitby Musicport last year. Loads of fantastic performers ( incl a stunning steel band from leeds- which matched bellowhead in the jaw drop and boogie stakes). When they started I thought, and I'm still not sure whether this was inspirational analysis or pompous b****cks, it's a british Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Discuss !

a  I'm too old and no one knows The mothers of invention.

or  more likely

b I'm talking out my hat. Sorry

leetle bit embarrassing this but ok...my boyfriend and i were at the beautiful days festival last summer.  we wandered into a tent on the friday afternoon and saw a huge band setting up their instruments and doing what seemed like an endless soundcheck. i said "oh god, there's far too many instruments, it must be jazz [i really hate jazz]...let's go to the bar"

so we sat outside the beer tent just opposite and could hear bellowhead as they started up. pricked up my ears and went 'ok, this isn't jazz, this is something a bit special'...looked them up in the programme, saw it was something to do with spiers & boden (who i've been into for ages and seen live quite a few times) and sheepishly went back in to hear the rest of the set and needless to say completely fell in love. Seen them twice since then (scala and maltings) and don't think i've ever seen a more exciting live band.

(and other half has never stopped taking the piss out of me for what i said that first time...)

yay! saw them for the first time at cheltenham festival (2005) and was hooked! i was just dancing and going crazy and i wanted to properly get up and dance but unfortunately was stuck in the balcony :-( Bought the EP straightaway and danced round the house with it on full volume for the next 12 months really upset cos they weren't coming back anywhere over here. do some more tours in gloucestershire guys! Then they came back to cheltenham again in 2006 and i went crazy all over again. saw them at towersey where they were awesome - i was at the front! counted down the days till the album release, and now i have the album and am really really happy cos i have 17 tracks at home instead of 5. only sad thing is they're not coming back to cheltenham this year :-( still, will have to get tickets for somewhere else...

ps my friend is into more ballad/trad folk and thinks they're too "big band". she's wrong. totally. hehe...

My mum intoduced me to Spiers and Boden- a gig at Banbury Folk Club ages ago, and I was hooked instantly. (Thank you mum, it more than makes up for sending me to a Catholic school!!) Then we saw Bellowhead at the Zodiac in Oxford (or was the first time at last year's OFF? Anyway, have seen them a few times.) It's like nothing I've ever heard before, and the performance is always more than just a gig. Fantastic stuff!

$%*'`[stonepoem]%*'`@I was playing with Wiltshire folk-poppers Mr Love & Justice at Crawley folk festival and we supported the mighty Bellowhead. It was a scorching day (the kind where ice-creams melt as soon as you buy them) but Bellowhead gave us an even more scorching gig. Until then, I hadn't realised *folk* could be so cool, so innovative yet traditional, so complex but accessible. And the energy and fun of it! Yup, I loved them straightaway.

After that, I next saw them in Swindon. Another really great show, and I rushed home and wrote this...

Heroes Wind

All hear the Bellowhead
Sucking us in - like fireflies
Circling end of summer sigh
From young bucks leap
O'er old man's grimace grey.
Like madrigal birds at dusk -
On accordion breath that heaves,
With fiddling sentry's hotfoot dance
To circus lights and roguery.
Let it blow like Bucovina brass
And let us show our red flamed hair,
Then know this copper breeze
That hails a bellowed call
Of grand traditions,
In the air.

Thank you Bellowhead, and I'm looking forward to your first stadium tour when it comes.

I saw a review of Burlesque on This site, and was intrigued. I bought the album on spec (very possibly my best bit of spec ever!) and have been playing it none stop for a week (Yep - I'm a long term fan, me!) I am planning to see them at Buxton next week - I'd already have a ticket if their online booking page would accept my card (gnash gnash gnash)!

I must admit to a secret hope that nobody else in the world hears of Bellowhead until they play the (as yet unconfirmed) gig at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham, on account of it selling out in a minute if they do (afterwards, I hope the world embraces them and they become bigger than your God of choice!)

Anyway, first post over with. The Outlandish Knight is one of the fastest entries into my ever-changing, top-ten-songs-of-all-time that i can remember. I have to go listen to it just once more tonight.

I was familiar with J&J from listening to Radio2 and hearing snippets...and I have a very eclectic taste in music indeed but had never really been diverted towards contemporary folk, all I knew was that I had a love of both accordions/melodeon and banjos, but of course that kind of talk will usually get you pointed at and hustled out of chart-lover land...so I just quietly enjoyed it in the same way I've loved film scores, Sibelius and weird electro, without upsetting people haha!

My mum heard Bellowhead on Radio 4 when the album was released and got it as a present for my dad last October, except that I was mesmerised and ran off with the CD myself, since then Burlesque has not really left my MP3 player, it's been the main thing keeping me going during the drudgery of a year of factory work, since then I've got myself immersed in all of the back catalogue for Bellowhead and the two Js and discovered a bit about the folk-scene. It's the big instrumental stuff I like best however so Bellowhead REALLY hits the spot. I've seen them four times now and it's a Spiers and Boden gig at a folk club in a couple of weeks, so I'd say that's a happy story of love at first sight really...and growing stronger as the months pass by!
